A Network of Expertise on
Lithium-Ion Batteries

KLiB [ˈklɪb] is a German association of industries and research facilities along the value chain for lithium-ion batteries

Our goal is to pool the know-how and capabilities of large and small players alike to strengthen Germany as well as Europe as a location for cutting-edge technologies and the production of lithium-ion batteries in a pre-competitive environment. KLiB is a platform for communication, exchange of knowledge and partnering. It helps to create networks and clusters among industrial enterprises, service providers, research institutes and public institutions. Its members are interested in strategic partnerships and cooperations with research initiatives and other networks – not just in Germany, but also in Europe and all over the world.

Competence

KLiB unites all the know-how that is needed to produce lithium-ion batteries on a large scale.

Its more than 60 members are enterprises and research facilities along the value chain of lithium-ion batteries – reaching from mining and battery recycling companies, chemical industry and suppliers for battery components, automation technology and production equipment via cell and battery manufacturers to OEM.

Network

Our goal is to unite enterprises and research facilities along the value chain of lithium-ion batteries.

We offer our members a platform to communicate, exchange knowledge and to form new partnerships. In the years since its foundation a strong network has formed, that has not only initiated joint research and development in the pre-competitive environment, but also the setup of important common infrastructure and research clusters.

Lithium-ion batteries

The efficient storage of electric energy is essential for the global energy politics and concepts to stop the climate change and global warming and to lead into a sustainable future.

The members of KLiB are convinced, that modern Lithium-ion batteries dominate most of the markets now and will do so even more in the next 20 years. They are essential for electric mobility, portable and most stationary applications.

Our Vision

Global competitiveness and sustainability of all elements of the value chain for lithium-ion batteries at the high-tech location of Germany

Members

Mission

We are actively strengthening Germany’s global competitiveness as a high-tech location in a European context by sustainably supporting a leading value chain for lithium-ion batteries
  • We network industrial companies, research institutes, and public institutions in a cross-sector technological approach
  • We conduct the cross-sector dialog and initiate and moderate the cooperation of members up to the formation of consortia
  • We strengthen public awareness of the economic importance of future technology of rechargeable batteries for Germany as a high-tech location and the added value of the members

Values that Connect KLiB Members

Our actions are determined by fairness, transparency, and integrity. We work together with our partners from business, science, politics, and society with commitment and trust. We are united by a willingness to actively promote common goals based on vision and mission.

Our Fields of Action

  • Collecting, processing and providing relevant, publicly accessible information for the members
  • Evaluating the German and European ecosystem Batteries in international competition
  • Initiating and moderating the cross-sector dialog among the members
  • Identifying needs for action and formulating recommendations for action
  • Designing and coordinating shared KLiB positions
  • Leading and supporting dialog with politicians (ministries, politicians, political groups), especially in Germany but also at the European level (EU Commission, companies, member states).
  • Initiating research programs/projects and moderating cooperation between members up to the formation of consortia
  • Strengthening public awareness of the economic importance of the future issue of rechargeable batteries (press conferences, information events, studies, etc.)

KLiB Key Messages

  • Battery technology is the key technology for the competitiveness of a variety of products and applications such as consumer electronics, battery-powered tools and devices, stationary energy storage devices of various sizes, electric aircraft (drones), and above all electric vehicles.
  • The entire battery ecosystem is important and includes the extraction and processing of raw materials, the production of battery materials and all other necessary subcomponents of the battery cell, the production of battery cells, the production of battery modules and systems, the use of battery systems in the corresponding application, the recycling of batteries with recovery and recycling of the materials used in the production process. This also includes the facilities and machines necessary for the processes and their automation.
  • The energy revolution demands a sustainable and energy-efficient use of renewable energies. Therefore, it is essential for the entire battery ecosystem to establish sustainable, resource-friendly, and energy-efficient extraction, processing, treatment, production, and recycling methods to further reduce the CO2 balance of batteries. This will also ensure the long-term competitiveness of German and European value chains.
  • The large-scale production of battery cells acts as a driving force for the competitiveness of entire value chains and is an integral part of the batteries ecosystem in Germany and Europe.
  • In many areas of the battery ecosystem and especially in battery cell production, market entry is associated with great opportunities, but also with high risks due to international competition. It is important to find ways, together with politicians, to create framework conditions for a sustainably successful industrial implementation.
  • The market entry is being carried out with current technology. Continuous and comprehensive research and development in all aspects of the battery ecosystem will guarantee long-term competitiveness. A suitable research landscape and research funding by the public sector are essential for this.
  • For maximum participation in the global value creation of battery technology by German industry located in Germany, existing opportunities must be taken advantage of in every sub-area of the ecosystem and especially in their interlinking.
